Ever wonder how music... works? Why are songs structured the way they are? How do we organize sound tonally? Or why can we predict where a piece of music is going and sometimes it surprises us? This class aims to give students a broad overview of music theory using great works of musical theatre as a foundation. Students will learn how to analyze music both audibly and visually through the lens of popular Broadway productions! This class will equip students with a valuable understanding of the language of music that is applicable both onstage and off!
Presley DuPuis is a proud CYT graduate who flipped over to the grown-up side and still hasn't looked back throughout his work as a teacher, music director, pit musician, HYPE adviser, and improv coach. He has gone from being the kid who would play the piano when he wasn't supposed to to the accompanist himself with his involvement in CYT dating back to 2008 with CYT North Idaho's first fully staged production: "Snow White." (I played the Magic Mirror.) Focusing on all aspects of music and theatre in his studies, Presley holds an A.S. in Music from North Idaho College and is currently finishing his degrees in both Collaborative Piano and Vocal Performance at Eastern Washington University. He has musically directed and played piano for many productions with local high schools, elementary choirs, community theatres, and his favorites: CYT North Idaho and CYT Spokane with Fall 2018's "Shrek the Musical" and being his most recent. He is thrilled to be back in the swing of things teaching CYT classes and is eager to see where the Lord will lead him and his students.
